Tonight I saw this in my backyard:

Yes, you are looking at two beetles mating. At least, I think that’s what you’re looking at.

Here are the parties involved:

Based on my somewhat limited knowledge of insectology (and my somewhat limited knowledge of animal mating behaviors), I’m guessing this little one is el señor.

And this humongous thing is the lady:

Anyone know what kind of beetles they are? It’s probably something super simple but I have been googling and can’t quite figure it out. Also, what is she doing there? She’s in a little hole in the ground that I assume she made. Laying eggs? Hiding from el señor (and who can blame her, because he was eager and aggressive and appeared to be mostly inept)?

Anyway, that’s my exciting night.
