This time out of Vacaville, CA. Thanks to Feminocracy for the heads up:
A teacher’s gender reassignment surgery has caught the attention of some parents who want to know why the school district didn’t notify them ahead of time about the change.
A music teacher at Foxboro Elementary School, who was formerly a woman, returned to school as a man at the beginning of the school year.
Some parents told Travis Unified School District that they feel like their rights to know were violated. (via kcra)
I’m not entirely sure what rights the parents expected to have in this situation. The right to be notified? Sorry, kids, that’s not how it works. See, the teacher has a right to have people mind their own freaking business. My favorite quote from the article, though, is this one:
“I wasn’t given the opportunity to make a choice on what I wanted to do with the situation,” Weinzinger said.
Ok, first of all, it’s not a situation. Secondly, it’s not your choice. And finally, Ms. Weinzinger, what on earth did you think you were going to do about it? Change him back?
I’d like to say that I give props to the school district for treating “the situation” with the dignity and privacy it deserves. But I’m not in the habit of celebrating when people actually do the things they should be doing anyway.
